Impact Chain

The Impact Chain view shows the most significant chain of tasks feeding into the current task, taking into account resource contention. For an endpoint task, the Impact Chain is equivalent to the Critical Chain. This view allows you to explore both impact chains and shadow chains, which are chains of tasks within a certain number of days from becoming critical. You can access this view by clicking on the Impact Chain tab within the Task Details view.

Layout and customization

The Impact Chain view shares many features with other task views, including customizable columns and view settings. For information about general task view features and customization options, visit the task views documentation page.

Filters and options

The following filters are available in the Impact Chain view to help refine the chain of tasks displayed:

  • Search: Allows you to search for tasks within the impact chain by partial task name or task UID.

  • Filter: Choose between the impact chain and the variability chain.

    • Filter Impact: Filters for the longest chain, including both task and resource dependencies, connected to the selected task

    • Filter Variability: Filters for the chain of tasks, including both task and resource dependencies, that has the highest variability considering the difference between the Low Risk Durations and the Focus Durations. This is known as the Variability Chain.

  • Direction: You can filter for predecessor dependencies (backward), successor dependencies (forward), or immediate neighbors.

  • Sensitivity: This filter provides a selection list of duration values. It is not available when filtering for variability.

    • 0 days: Displays the impact chain for the current task.

    • Larger values: Includes tasks within the selected number of days from impacting the current task.

    • Minimum: Displays the "longest chain," similar to 0 days sensitivity, except when gaps exist in the critical chain. The system calculates the minimum sensitivity required to span these gaps, which can occur due to task constraints, resource calendars, or resource limitations.

    • Infinite: Shows the chain of all task dependencies, regardless of how far they are from being critical.

  • Horizon: Filters tasks based on their projected start dates within the selected horizon.

  • Group by Impact: This option is only visible if the Sensitivity is set to something greater than 0 days. It groups tasks according to their impact, with the most critical tasks displayed first.

Unique columns

  • Duration Until Impact: This column is specific to the Impact Chain view and displays the remaining duration until each task will impact the current task. This column is particularly useful when you have set the Sensitivity to a value greater than 0 days. Tasks are grouped based on the values in this column if the Group by Impact option is enabled.

Shadow chains

When the Sensitivity is set to a value greater than 0 days, the view displays tasks that are within the selected number of days from impacting the current task. This allows for proactive management of potential risks before tasks become urgent.
