Assign resources to tasks
While assigning resources to tasks is not required to schedule a project in Fusion Online, doing so allows you to:
Evaluate the impact of limited resource availability on project timing
Analyze resource loading and identify potential overallocation or underutilization
Resources should generally be modeled as generic roles, not individual people. For example, use “Software Engineer” or “QA Analyst” rather than naming a specific person. If you want to designate a specific user who will work a task, that’s done separately using user assignments.
Using generic resources allows Fusion Online to schedule the project more flexibly and gives you the ability to model changes in team size or resource availability without needing to rebuild the project plan.
Step 1: Set up the resource sheet
Before you can assign resources to tasks, you must first define the available resources in your project:
Go to the Project Details view.
Click the Resources tab.
Add project resources manually by clicking + create new resource.
You can specify resource names, availability, and other key information. These resources will then be available to assign throughout the project.

Step 2: Assign resources to tasks
Once your resource sheet is populated, you can assign resources in two places:
Option 1: Task Details view
Open the Task Details view by searching for the task in a task list view or using the global search in the top navigation bar.
Select the desired resource(s) and the required number of units.
Option 2: Network Diagram task panel
Open the Network Diagram and enter Create Draft mode.
Double-click on a task or click the pencil icon to open the task panel on the right.
Assign resources just as you would in the Task Details view.
Step 3: Analyze resource load
After assigning resources and rescheduling the project, you can evaluate resource usage in various views:
My Resources – shows resource assignments and availability from your perspective.
Resources tab in Project Details – provides a project-specific view of resource loading.
These views help you assess whether any resource constraints are affecting the schedule.
