Creating a project

Fusion Online projects capture the logic behind your planned approach to delivering work and completing a project. Each project is modeled using tasks, dependencies, and durations—the building blocks that represent your project’s logic. Once scheduled, this model generates both tabular data and graphical insights into your project plan.

In addition to task relationships and durations, your project model can also capture:

  • The effects of limited resources (if resources are assigned to tasks).

  • The effects of non-working time, such as holidays and weekends, defined in the project calendar.

Prework: Planning before you build

Before jumping into task creation, it's a good idea to plan your network structure:

  • Agree on the project objectives with stakeholders.

  • Architect the network—think through the high-level structure.

  • Identify contributors—determine who will help supply task and resource details.

  • Decide on the appropriate level of detail, especially for early planning. Not every detail needs to be captured up front; detail can easily be added later.

  • Identify critical or high-risk areas and near-term tasks where more granularity may be helpful.

  • Consider project phases and how they should be represented.

  • Define the project endpoints—these are typically the final deliverables.

Ideally, a project will have one endpoint. One or two critical intermediate milestones can also be added as endpoints if needed for external reporting.

Creating a project in Fusion Online

You can create a project in a few ways:

  • Click the Create button in the top bar and select Project.

  • Use the + create new project link in any project list view.

  • Copy an existing project from its Project Details page by opening the action menu and selecting Copy.

  • Upload a project from Fusion Desktop.

When creating a new project (not from upload), you’ll be prompted to enter a Project Name, Organization, and any other relevant information. Once completed, click Save.

Unless you copy an existing project or upload one from Fusion Desktop, the new project will be empty—it will not contain any tasks, links, or endpoints.

The next step is to build the network, where you'll define the tasks and logic that represent your project’s planned approach.
