Custom Fields

The Custom Fields page is located under the Setup section in the navigation menu and is accessible only to System Administrators. Custom fields enable you to define additional data fields for projects, tasks, endpoints, and resources, allowing you to tailor the information tracked in Fusion Online according to your organization’s needs.

Custom Fields

Supported data types

The following data types are available for custom fields:

  • Date: Stores a date value.

  • Duration: Stores a duration value, such as "3 days" or "2 weeks".

  • Flag: Stores a Boolean value (Yes/No).

  • Number: Stores a numeric value.

  • Text: Stores a single-line text value.

  • Multi-line Text: Stores longer text entries spanning multiple lines.

Microsoft Project field mappings

Custom fields can be optionally mapped to custom fields in Microsoft Project (MSP). When a field is mapped, the data will sync during project upload/download with Fusion Desktop, ensuring consistency between Fusion Online and Microsoft Project.

Viewing and using custom fields

Custom fields can be displayed and filtered in Project Views, Task Views, Endpoint Views, and Resource Views. They are also available in detail views, such as Project Details, Task Details, Fever Charts, and Resource Details, where they can be viewed and updated.

Creating a new custom field

To create a new custom field, click on the + create new custom field link at the top of the page. This opens a form where you can define the properties of the custom field.

Filtering custom fields

Use the Field Type filter to display only custom fields of the selected type (Project, Task, Endpoint, or Resource). This helps you quickly find specific fields when managing a large list of custom fields.

Managing custom fields

Click on the field name in the table to edit the custom field, or use the action menu in the Name column for options to Edit or Delete the field.

Custom field properties

When creating or editing a custom field, you need to configure the following properties:

  • Name: The display name of the custom field, which appears as the field label in table and details views.

  • Description: An optional field to provide additional context or usage instructions for the custom field.

  • Field Type: Choose between Project, Task, Endpoint, and Resource. This selection determines where the custom field will be used and cannot be changed once the field has been created.

  • Data Type: Choose from Date, Duration, Flag, Number, Text, or Multi-line Text. The data type cannot be changed once the field has been created.

  • Map to MSP Field: Select the Microsoft Project custom field to map to. This mapping ensures data synchronization between Fusion Online and Microsoft Project via Fusion Desktop.

  • Allow Fusion Updates: Enable this option to allow the field to be updated directly in Fusion Online. If disabled, the field will be read-only and data can only be updated via Microsoft Project.

  • Use for All Projects: Check this option to include the custom field automatically in all projects. If unchecked, the field must be manually selected in the Field Usage dialog in Project Details for each project.

  • Add Selection List: If the Data Type is set to Text, you can define a selection list. Users will be presented with a drop-down list of values to choose from when filling in the field, limiting input to predefined options.

Viewing custom field usage

To see where a custom field is being used, click on the field name to open its details view. Navigate to the Projects tab to view a list of projects utilizing this custom field. Note that this tab only shows results for fields where the Use for All Projects option is not selected.

Additional notes

  • Custom fields enhance data tracking and reporting by allowing you to define fields that meet specific business needs.

  • Custom fields can be used as filters and sort criteria in views, making it easier to find and analyze relevant data.

  • If a custom field is mapped to a Microsoft Project field, updates in Fusion Online will sync back to Microsoft Project when using Fusion Desktop.
